Item Composition of Coffea canephora Varieties from the Western Amazon(Sociedade Brasileira de Química, 2024-04-05) Acre, Lucas B.; Viencz, Thayna; Francisco, Julyene S.; Rocha, Rodrigo B.; Alves, Enrique A.; Benassi, Marta T.This research aimed to compare the composition profiles of roasted Coffea canephora varieties (conilon, robusta, and intervarietal hybrids) grown in the Western Amazon. Ten coffees of each variety were evaluated. No difference in the contents of caffeine (1427 to 3364 mg 100 g 1) and kahweol (absence to 25.7 mg 100 g 1) was observed. Hybrid coffees were discriminated from traditional varieties (conilon and robusta) and stood out for their higher content of trigonelline, chlorogenic acids, and total diterpenes (mean values of 613,3791, and 471 mg 100 g 1, respectively), higher cafestol/kahweol ratio (7.6 to 15.0), and higher frequency of kahweol presence. Traditional varieties only differed in cafestol and 16-O-methylcafestol contents. Robusta coffees stood out for their lower cafestol content (116 mg 100 g 1), and conilon for their lower 16-O-methylcafestol content (139 mg 100 g 1). Differences between the traditional varieties are smaller than that observed among them and the intervarietal hybrid coffees.Item Physiological quality of seeds of Coffea canephora from early and late clones during maturation(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2024-03-21) Crasque, Jeane; Brandão, Thielen Martins dos Santos; Cerri Neto, Basílio; Comério, Marcone; Volpi, Paulo Sérgio; Arantes, Lúcio de Oliveira; Machado Filho, José Altino; Milanez, Camilla Rozindo Dias; Dousseau-Arantes, SaraThe objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of seeds from early and late maturing Coffea canephora clones, aiming to identify the ideal harvest time. The fruits were collected every two weeks from 188 days after anthesis (DAA) and characterized as green, cane green, cherry, raisin and dry. The seeds were evaluated for water content, germination percentage, normal and abnormal seedlings, nongerminated seeds and dead seeds, vigor index, hypocotyl lenght, and root length. Seed germination of the early maturing clone started at 202 DAA, while that of the late maturing clone started at 230 DAA, with both clones showing a water content of 63% and a dry mass of 37%. Although the optimum harvest point was identified at the cherry ripening stage, it was found that the late maturing clone showed a more pronounced variation in the maturation process, directly impacting the physiological quality of the seeds. Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between the maturation stages and the physiological quality of the seeds. For the early maturing clone, the maximum physiological quality was recorded at 244 DAA, corresponding to 80% of fruits at the cherry stage, while for the late maturing clone this point was reached at 326 DAA, with 98% of the fruits ripe.Item New model of clonal garden for the production of robusta coffee plantlets(Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - Embrapa, 2022-09-12) Espindula, Marcelo Curitiba; Araújo, Larissa Fatarelli Bento de; Diocleciano, João Maria; Rocha, Rodrigo Barros; Dias, Jairo Rafael Machado; Verdin Filho, Abraão CarlosThe objective of this work was to evaluate the production of cuttings of Coffea canephora genotypes, in a new system for training mother plants called “vertical clonal garden”. The proposed new system consists of training coffee plants with only one shoot and without bending the main shoot, so that the secondary orthotropic shoots, from which the clonal cuttings will be taken, are formed across the length of the stem in the vertical direction. The capacity for the production of cuttings of ten hybrid genotypes of coffee plants was evaluated over ten production cycles. The 'BRS 2314', 'BRS 3213', and 'BRS 3210' genotypes showed cutting production per cut of 425,000 cuttings per hectare, considered above the obtained average. The 'BRS 3193', 'BRS 2336', 'BRS 3220', and 'BRS 3137' genotypes were the least productive. Coffee plants trained in the “vertical clonal garden” system can produce about 425,000 cuttings per hectare per harvest period or about 1.275 million cuttings per hectare per year, over three harvest periods, with a greater ease in crop management and treatments.Item Expression of self-incompatibility in Coffea canephora genotypes grown in the western Amazon(Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - Embrapa, 2022-12-05) Depolo, Rodrigo Prado; Rocha, Rodrigo Barros; Souza, Carolina Augusto de; Santos, Maurício Reginaldo Alves dos; Espindula, Marcelo Curitiba; Teixeira, Alexsandro LaraThe objective of this work was to characterize the expression of gametophytic self-incompatibility in a Coffea canephora breeding population, to assist in the management and development of new cultivars. For that purpose, 550 in vitro pollinations were carried out among 62 parent plants, of which 27 were from the conilon botanical variety and 35 from the robusta. Thirty-two genotypes compatible with all previously known testers were identified, suggesting the existence of new compatibility groups. From these results, hybridizations were carried out in a complete diallel design with reciprocal crosses to characterize new test plants. Based on the compatibility response with the test plants, the genotypes were clustered into the six following groups: group I, 11 (17.74%) genotypes; group II, 13 (20.97%); group III, 6 (9.68%); group IV, 9 (14.52%); group V, 8 (12.90%); and group VI, 15 (24.19%). The genotypes of the botanical variety robusta show a higher frequency of plants in compatibility group VI and a greater genetic variability, whereas those of the conilon variety have a higher frequency of plants in compatibility group II. The identification of new compatibility groups assists in new management practices that seek to increase the efficiency of pollination by favoring, through natural means, fully compatible crosses.
