The objective of this study was to select Arabica coffee accessions from the Minas Gerais Coffee Germplasm Collection grounded in agronomic traits. The productivity, quantified in bags per hectare, of 25 accessions was evaluated across four harvests, as was the percentage of maturation and floating beans. Genetic parameters were estimated for these attributes, aiming to glean insights into the potential for genetic gain and to facilitate decision-making in breeding practices. The REML/BLUP procedure was used to estimate variance components and predict random effects within the agronomic data. Genetic variability was observed among the studied accessions for productivity and the percentage of dried/pass fruits, indicating potential for genetic gain through selection within this group of accessions. There is potential for genetic breeding through selection, leading to subsequent enhancement in the means of the evaluated traits, notably in accessions MG0223 (Pacamara), MG0438 (Mundo Novo x S795 UFV 335-04), MG0194 (Caturra Amarelo Colombiano), MG0420 (Mundo Novo x S795 UFV 315-04), and MG0036 (Bourbon Amarelo). These results highlight the potential of these accessions to produce specialty coffees and their suitability for future breeding programs aimed at improving beans quality and productivity in Brazil.Item Sensory perception of coffee consumers as a function of different genotypes and extraction methods(Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, 2024-09-30) Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Sousa, Maísa Mancini Matioli de; Ribeiro, Michele Nayara; Vilela, Diego Júnior Martins; Pereira, Dyanna Rangel; Carvalho, Gladyston RodriguesCoffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world, with unique organoleptic characteristics of aroma and flavor, also varying according to the several extraction methods. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate whether the different Arabic coffee genotypes prepared by various extraction methods would influence amateur consumers’ perception of sensory and hedonic judgments of specialty coffee. A large-sample experiment (n = 270) was conducted in a coffee shop at the Universidade Federal de Lavras and participants were divided into three groups according to the evaluated genotypes (Bourbon Amarelo, Pacamara and Híbrido de Timor), who tasted four samples, varying to the extraction methods (‘Conventional Brewed’, Hario V60, French Press and Espresso). From the results obtained, it is possible to conclude that there is a change in the sensory perception of aromas and flavors of coffees in all genotypes studied in the four extraction methods, as well as in the acceptance and purchase intention by consumers.Item Morphological, physiological, and agronomic traits of crossings of 'Icatu' x 'Catimor' coffee tree subjected to water deficit(Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - Embrapa, 2022-07-27) Coelho, Larissa Sousa; Tassone, Guilherme Augusto Teixeira; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Silva, Vânia Aparecida; Viana, Mariana Thereza Rodrigues; Pereira, Fernanda Aparecida Castro; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Silveira, Helbert Rezende de Oliveira; Botelho, Cesar EliasThe objective of this work was to select genotypes of Coffea arabica with good yield and potential tolerance to water deficit, as well as to try to understand the physiological and anatomical mechanisms involved in the adaptability of these genotypes to water stress. The physiological, anatomical, and agronomic traits of 19 genotypes of C. arabica were evaluated under the two following water conditions: regular irrigation and no irrigation (soil water deficit). The 'IPR 100', 2, 5, and 7 genotypes showed agronomic, physiological, and anatomical traits that contributed to a better water status maintenance in the initial development of coffee plants. Based on these results, these genotypes are potentially tolerant to water deficit. The 4, 10, 11, 14, 15, and 'Bourbon Amarelo IAC J10' genotypes show a lower adaptability of the anatomical structures under soil-water deficit conditions. The coffee tree genotypes display leaf plasticity, such as the thickness of palisade and spongy parenchyma, and the number, position, dimensions, and mobility of stomata under water deficit conditions.Item Productivity and beverage sensory quality of arabica coffee intercropped with timber species(Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - Embrapa, 2020) Freitas, Ana Flávia de; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Silveira, Helbert Rezende de Oliveira; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Venturin, Regis Pereira; Silva, Vânia AparecidaThe objective of this work was to evaluate the productivity and beverage sensory quality of arabica coffee under the influence of tree species cultivated at different spacings. The experiment was set in 2012, in the municipality of Santo Antônio do Amparo, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. A randomized complete block design was carried out with four replicates and seven treatments, as follows: Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99 Coffea arábica in monoculture (3.40x0.65 m); and this cultivar intercropped at two spacings (9.0x13.6 and 18.0x13.6 m) in the coffee row ‒ either with African mahogany (Khaya ivorensis), teak (Tectona grandis), or pink cedar (Acrocarpus fraxinifolius). Three coffee rows were fixed between rows, totaling 13.6 m between the wooded rows. Productivity, sensory analysis (cup test), and content analysis of sensory attributes were evaluated in the 2017 and 2018 crop years. The treatments and years of harvest influenced productivity. The sensory analysis was positive for coffee intercropped with African mahogany and teak, in 2018. Sensory attributes and nuances are modified by the Years of harvest. Arabica coffee plants intercropped with African mahogany show a superior productivity, regardless of the spacing between species, as well as a higher sensory quality in the 2018 harvest.Item Agronomic performance of coffee in response to framework pruning in cycles of the “safra zero”(Editora UFLA, 2020) Maia, Pedro Lage; Tassone, Guilherme Augusto Teixeira; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Botelho, Deila Magna dos Santos; Moreira, Priscila Carvalho; Carvalho, Gladyston RodriguesIn this paper, we aimed at selecting genotypes of Coffea arabica L. that are responsive to framework pruning, with high productive potential and desirable agricultural features. We evaluated 18 progenies in the F5 generation, 8 of them being from the group Catucaí (breeding of seedlings of Red Catuaí with coffee seeds of the Icatu germplasm) and ten descendants from the Timor Hybrid (breeding of the Red and Yellow Catuaí with the Timor Hybrid), as well as two commercial cultivars as control (Tupi IAC 1669-33 and Obatã IAC 1669-20). The experiment was carried out at the experimental field of the Federal University of Lavras. The coffee was pruned in August 2014 after the sixth crop and once again in August 2016, being two cycles in the “safra zero” system. The design used was in randomized blocks (RBD) with three repetitions and 20 treatments (18 progenies and two commercial cultivars) totaling 60 experimental plots. We evaluated the area under the progress curve of incidence and severity of leaf rust and cercosporiosis, the productivity (sacs ha-1), sieve #16 and over (%), mocha-type grains (%) and apparent specific mass of grains (tonm-3). The genotype 12 (H516-2-1-1-18-1-4) was responsive to the framework pruning and kept its productivity stable in both pruning cycles, being efficient in such system of crop conduction, besides presenting low incidence and severity of coffee leaf rust and cercosporiosis and high sieve.Item Sensory quality of roasted coffee beans under different storage conditions(Editora UFLA, 2019-10) Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Rocha, Hully Alves; Mendonça, Luciana Maria Vieira Lopes; Mendonça, José Marcos Angélico de; Reis, Iêda Bruna dos; Evaristo, Carlos Henrique; Terra, Sávia Del ValeRoasted coffee is subject to loss of quality due to aging, and the intensity of these losses is influenced by packaging. The objective in this study was to evaluate the possible losses in the sensory quality of a specialty roasted coffee, stored in beans for 150 days in different packages and storage temperatures. The experiment was carried out in the Coffee Classification and Industrialization Laboratories of IFSULDEMINAS Campus Muzambinho. The coffee was roasted and after 48 hours it was packed in three different packages and kept stored at room temperature and refrigerated at 18ºC ± 1ºC for 150 days, with evaluations every 50 days, starting from zero time. The experimental design used was entirely randomized with 3 repetitions. Sensory evaluation was performed by three Q-Grader judges, according to the SCAA protocol. The data were evaluated using the SISVAR software, and when significance between treatments was detected, the regression and Scott-Knott tests were applied at the 5% probability level. The packaging used for storage did not interfere in the quality of the coffee. There was an interaction between temperature and storage time for the sensory attribute “body”. The quality decreased linearly with the storage time, from 86 to 80 points, to 84 days of storage.Item Morphoagronomic and sensory performance of coffee cultivars in initial stage of development in cerrado mineiro(Editora UFLA, 2019-04) Pereira, Dyanna Rangel; Aguiar, João Augusto Rodrigues de; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Fassio, Larissa de Oliveira; Carvalho, João Paulo Felicori; Carvalho, Samuel Pereira de; Carvalho, Gladyston RodriguesQuality, in a condition of typical cultivation of the Cerrado. The trial was carried out in the municipality of Monte Carmelo - MG, in randomized block design, with four replicates. Morphoagronomic characteristics were evaluated 15 months after the implantation of the crop. The productivity and, subsequently, the quality of the beans, were evaluated at 18 months. Statistical analyzes were performed using the Genes software. The data were submitted to analysis of variance. The F test was used to determine the significance of treatments. The means were grouped by the Scott-Knott test (1974) at 5% probability and the experimental precision was verified by the estimation of the experimental variation coefficient (CV) and the selective accuracy. The sensory attributes were evaluated in a radar diagram, called “Sensogram”. Genetic variability was observed among cultivars for the vegetative characters. The cultivars Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 and MGS Aranãs stood out as more productive, with a high percentage of sieve 16 and above and low percentage of grain type mocha. All the cultivars stood out as special, with emphasis on the cultivar Bourbon Amarelo IAC J10 in the wet processing and Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 in the natural processing.Item Simultaneous selection in coffee progenies of mundo novo by selection indices(Editora UFLA, 2019-01) Tasson, Guilherme Augusto Teixeira; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Carvalho, Gladyston Rodrigues; Pereira, Fernanda Aparecida Castro; Andrade, Vinícius Teixeira; Botelho, César EliasCoffee cultivars that are better adapted and more productive can help reduce production costs and make coffee cultivation more profitable. The Mundo Novo cultivar has stood out as one of the most productive cultivars of Coffea arabica L. Therefore, the aim of this work was to select Mundo Novo progenies with high bean yield capacity and with other agronomic characteristics of interest. We evaluated the bean yield, seed size, plant height, upper and lower canopy diameter, stem diameter, and plant vigor of 24 F 4 progenies and one check cultivar. The experimental design consisted of a randomized complete block design with three replicates and experiments were carried out in two sites: São Sebastião do Paraíso (SSP) and Três Pontas (TP), MG, Brazil. The mixed model approach was used to calculate the genotypic value for each progeny, after which the selective accuracy and genetic gain of the two best progenies in each trait were calculated, the simultaneous selection index of Mulamba and Mock was used to select the two most promising progenies at each site. In general, the genetic gain was higher at SSP than at TP. In SSP, the most promising progenies were 1 [IAC376-2 (M. Novo) x IAC386-17 (M. Novo)] and 20 [IAC382-10 (M. Novo) x IAC388-20 (M. Novo)]. In TP, the most promising progeny was 22 [H1535/181 (M. Novo) x (S795) 1344/10/5], together with the check (Mundo Novo IAC379/19). The highest selection gain was expressed for bean size (the percentage of beans retained in sieve 17).
