Item Selection of differentiated maturity genotypes of Coffea canephora(Editora da Universidade Estadual de Maringá - EDUEM, 2025-06-02) Senra, João Felipe de Brites; Silva, Viviane Alexia Correia; Esposti, Marlon Dutra Degli; Ferreira, Adésio; Milheiros, Idalina Sturião; Ramos, Isabela Bolari; Oliveira, Rosana Gomes de; Benevenute, Lorran MarquesThe aim of this study was to select Coffea canephora genotypes from the seminal propagation variety ‘ES8152’ with different harvest times. The experiment was conducted using a Federer augmented block design with three repetitions, evaluating 175 genotypes and four clonal witnesses in two harvests (2022 and 2023), and 20 morphoagronomic characteristics were evaluated. The data were analyzed using the REML/BLUP methodology with the Selegen software, where the variance components and genetic values were estimated. The selection was performed using the Mulamba-Rank index. The bottom sieve (BS) and top sieve (TS) characteristics had high heritability (0.5779 and 0.6694, respectively) and accuracy (0.7602 and 0.8182, respectively). TS also showed high repeatability (0.6827). The genotypic effects were significant at 1% level for days for fruit ripening, fruit size, vegetative vigor, yield per plant, TS, and BS; at 5% level for general scale; and at 10% level for incidence of rust, degree of inclination, and percentage of fruit float. It was possible to distinguish 20 superior genotypes in terms of maturation, among which the selection gains for the genotypic clusters were 46.14, 45.92 and 41.56% for indefinite, early, and late maturation, respectively, by applying a selection intensity of 11.43%. Genotypes 25, 26, 73, 93, and 100 could be used for early maturing varieties, whereas genotypes 155 and 189 could be used for late-maturing varieties. The most promising genotypes for composing a variety, regardless of the maturation period, were 20, 39, 90, 112, and 190, as these were among the five best genotypes ranked in the three selection processes, demonstrating that they added superior desired morphoagronomic characteristics. It is concluded that there is genetic variability among the 175 genotypes evaluated, as well as significant genetic effects to be explored in the pool gene of individuals originating from the 'ES8152' variety.Item Initial performance and genetic diversity of coffee trees cultivated under contrasting altitude conditions(Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", 2023-08-14) Senra, João Felipe de Brites; Silva, Josimar Aleixo da; Ferreira, Adésio; Esposti, Marlon Dutra Degli; Ferrão, Maria Amélia Gava; Fassarella, Kamila Machado; Silva, Uliana Ribeiro; Milheiros, Idalina Sturião; Silva, Fernanda Gomes daThis work evaluated the initial performance and genetic diversity of Coffea canephora genotypes cultivated in environments at contrasting altitudes. Fourteen morphophysiological traits and seven descriptors of the genus Coffea spp. of coffee trees cultivated at altitudes of 140 m and 700 m were evaluated. The design used was Federer’s augmented block in a 2 × 112 factorial scheme with six blocks. The first factor was the two environments, and the second was the 112 genotypes, with eight common treatments, being five conilon coffee clones and three arabica coffee cultivars. The data were analyzed by the method of REML/BLUP and genetic correlation method. Genetic diversity was evaluated by estimating the distance matrix, applying the Gower methodology followed by the clustering method by Tocher and UPGMA. The phenotypic means were higher in the environment at an altitude of 700 m, except for plant height, number of leaves, and canopy height (CH). Genotypic effects were significant for most traits except for leaf width, CH, unit leaf area, and total leaf area. A wide genetic diversity was verified, with distances varying from 0.037 to 0.593 for the pairs of genotypes 26 × 93 and T7 × 76, respectively. Most of the traits studied showed high genotypic correlation with the environment and expressive genetic correlation between the evaluated traits thereby demonstrating the possibility of indirect selection. There is an adaptation of conilon coffee genotypes to high altitudes and the possibility of developing a specific cultivar for the southern state of Espírito Santo.Item Prediction of selection gains in Coffea canephora based on factorial scores(Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, 2004) Ferreira, Adésio; Cecon, Paulo Roberto; Cruz, Cosme Damião; Ferrão, Romário Gava; Silva, Marcia Flores da; Fonseca, Aymbiré Francisco Almeida da; Ferrão, Maria Amélia GavaThe technique of factor analysis in the simultaneous selection of traits and prediction of genetic gains was evaluated in Coffea canephora var. conilon. Fourteen traits in 40 assessed genotypes were evaluated at two sites. The technique was used aiming at the structuring and simplification of the data, without information loss and with biological interpretation. The experimental design was of randomized blocks in four replications, each plot containing two useful plants. The technique was efficient for the data simplification and structuring. Moreover, the estimates of the predicted gains in the traits involved in the factors showed magnitude near the direct selection gain, attesting the suitability of the technique and its use in improvement programs of the species.Item Inter-trait relations for direct and indirect selection in coffee(Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, 2008-06-09) Ferrão, Romário Gava; Ferreira, Adésio; Cruz, Cosme Damião; Cecon, Paulo Roberto; Ferrão, Maria Amélia Gava; Fonseca, Aymbiré Francisco Almeida da; Carneiro, Pedro Crescêncio de Souza; Silva, Marcia Flores daThe purpose of this study was to verify the possibility of using direct selection in nine traits underlying indirect selection for yield and determine which traits should participate in the selection process. Data of 40 Conilon coffee genotypes were analyzed in two experiments in the growing seasons of 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 in random blocks with four and six replications. The significance of phenotypic associations was evaluated by the t test and the genotypic and environmental associations by bootstrap resampling. The genotypic associations were higher than the phenotypic, indicating a prevailing influence of the genotypic over the environmental effects in the relationship between significant traits; equal signs indicated a lack of contrary action among the effects. The traits related to cycle; yield; ratio of fresh ripe cherries to clean coffee; empty or flat grains; and sieve 17 should be maintained in the selection, evaluation and study of genetic divergence. The estimated gains in grain yield by indirect selection for any trait studied are not satisfactory.Item Genetic diversity of promising ‘conilon’ coffee clones based on morpho-agronomic variables(Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2018) Giles, João Antonio D.; Partelli, Fábio L.; Ferreira, Adésio; Rodrigues, Joice P.; Oliosi, Gleison; Silva, Fernando H. Lima eKnowledge of the genetic variability of a population is essential to guide its preservation and maintenance in addition to increasing the efficiency of genetic breeding programs. On this basis, this study was conducted to evaluate the genetic diversity of Coffea canephora genotypes using multivariate statistical procedures applied to a set of morpho-agronomic variables. The materials employed in this study constitute a crop located in Vila Valério - ES, Brazil, where the genotypes are arranged in a randomized-blocks experimental design with four replicates. Significant differences were detected by the F test at the 1% or 5% probability levels among the genotypes for all evaluated traits, demonstrating heterogeneity of genetic constitution in the studied population, which is favorable to breeding, as it indicates the possibility to identify superior and divergent individuals. Based on the generalized Mahalanobis distance, the most divergente combinations were obtained between genotypes 23 and 10 (256.43) and 23 and 17 (250.09). The clusters formed by Tocher’s optimization and the UPGMA hierarchical method agreed, both similarly grouping the genotypes into three clusters. Of the analyzed traits, mature fruit weight (19.08%), yield (15.50%), plant diameter (12.42%), and orthotropic-shoot internode length (10.94%) were the most efficient to explain the dissimilarity among the genotypes.Item Tributun: a coffee cultivar developed in partnership with farmers(Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, 2020) Partelli, Fábio Luiz; Giles, João Antonio Dutra; Oliosi, Gleison; Covre, André Monzoli; Ferreira, Adésio; Rodrigues, Valcir MeneguelliTributun is a cultivar of Coffea canephora derived from breeding clones discovered by farmers.
