However, recommending cultivars for different regions requires evaluations that account for genotype × environment (G × E) interactions. This study evaluated the agronomic performance of 30 Coffea arabica cultivars in six locations in southern Minas Gerais, focusing on adaptability and phenotypic stability for yield and sensory quality using the GGE Biplot method. Traits assessed included yield, the proportion of high-sieve and mocha beans, bean density, and sensory quality. Statistical analyses involved ANOVA, the Scott-Knott test, and GGE Biplot. Two mega-environments were identified for yield and three for sensory quality. IPR 100, IAC Obatã 4739, Arara, and Catucaí 2SL demonstrated high yield, while MGS Paraíso 2 excelled in cup quality. GGE Biplot proved effective in identifying stable and adapted cultivars, reinforcing the need to integrate sensory attributes in breeding and recommendation strategies for specialty coffee production.Item Sample size estimation of fruit maturation for Arabica’s coffee(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2025-01-31) Botega, Gustavo Pucci; Abrahão, Juliana Costa de Rezende; Botelho, Thiago Tavares; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Salvador, Guilherme Soares; Gonçalves, Flávia Maria AvelarThis study aimed at establishing the ideal sample size for evaluating the maturation cycle in Coffea arabica, and investigating the errors associated with different sample sizes, in addition to verifying the possibility of using the clustering method to separate genotypes according to the maturation stage. Two experiments were analyzed: one with F2:3 progenies using visual maturation assessment through fruit counting, and another with cultivars using image processing for maturation assessment. To determine the ideal sample size for this trait, we used the estimation of the errors associated with maturation, using the bootstrap technique. Subsequently, the K-means algorithm was tested as an alternative for clustering genotypes into maturation classes. The application of the bootstrap technique in order to estimate the error associated with maturation revealed that the adoption of a 450-mL sample size resulted in an associated error of approximately 5%, indicating that it is an adequate size for character assessment. The implementation of K-means as a clustering tool offers a promising perspective for Arabica coffee plant breeding programs. A more comprehensive analysis, which not only assesses the proportion of ripe fruits, but also considers the distribution of different maturation stages, provides a more accurate understanding of the maturation process. This allows a more precise identification of genotypes with the most suitable performance for different growing conditions, as well as enabling adjustments in harvest management and post-harvest processing, optimizing coffee quality.Item Potential of new Coffea arabica cultivars for renewal of Meloidogyne paranaensis infested crop(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2025-06-09) Luz, Silvana Ramlow Otto Teixeira da; Teixeira, Lívia Pimenta; Salgado, Sonia Maria de Lima; Andrade, Vinícius Teixeira; Marques, Elizabeth Rosemeire; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Fatobene, Bárbhara Joana dos Reis; Carvalho, Gladyston RodriguesMeloidogyne paranaensis is one of the most damaging species of root-knot nematode to coffee trees. The development of resistant cultivars is crucial to the continuity of cultivation in infested areas. Thus, the aims of this study were to assess the performance of F6:7 progenies derived from the Amphillo germplasm in an infested area and to validate the new Coffea arabica MGS Vereda and MGS Guaiçara cultivars. The Catuaí Amarelo IAC 62 cultivar was used as the susceptible standard, and IPR 100 as the resistance standard. The experiment was conducted in 2018 using a randomized complete block design with four replications and 15 plants per plot. Resistance related and agronomic traits were assessed over four years. The lowest population of M. paranaensis was observed in progenies 88, 44B, and 105 from MGS Guaiçara, MGS Vereda, and IPR 100 cultivars, respectively. The progenies with the lowest population of M. paranaensis, although resistant, were not productive. The new MGS Vereda cultivar stood out in terms of yield and early fruit ripening, with the highest proportion of cherry fruit at harvest and a low incidence of peaberry grain. The results suggest MGS Vereda cultivar’s potential for the renewal of coffee cultivations occurs in a rainfed system according to the environmental conditions of the experiment.Item Caracterização de germoplasma de Coffea arabica L. com base em características agronômicas(Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, 2024-10-01) Silva, Maria Gabriela Pereira e; Abrahão, Juliana Costa de Rezende; Nadaleti, Denis Henrique Silva; Pereira, Antônio Alves; Fassio, Larissa de Oliveira; Botelho, Cesar EliasGenetic resources embody the reservoir of essential natural variability for cultivated species breeding programs. The objective of this study was to select Arabica coffee accessions from the Minas Gerais Coffee Germplasm Collection grounded in agronomic traits. The productivity, quantified in bags per hectare, of 25 accessions was evaluated across four harvests, as was the percentage of maturation and floating beans. Genetic parameters were estimated for these attributes, aiming to glean insights into the potential for genetic gain and to facilitate decision-making in breeding practices. The REML/BLUP procedure was used to estimate variance components and predict random effects within the agronomic data. Genetic variability was observed among the studied accessions for productivity and the percentage of dried/pass fruits, indicating potential for genetic gain through selection within this group of accessions. There is potential for genetic breeding through selection, leading to subsequent enhancement in the means of the evaluated traits, notably in accessions MG0223 (Pacamara), MG0438 (Mundo Novo x S795 UFV 335-04), MG0194 (Caturra Amarelo Colombiano), MG0420 (Mundo Novo x S795 UFV 315-04), and MG0036 (Bourbon Amarelo). The experiment was performed in the Experimental Campus of the UNESP in Registro, in a randomized block design, with three replications. Stem diameter, number of plagiotropic branches, plant height, number of internodes of plagiotropic branches, length of the first plagiotropic branch, incidence of brown eye spot and phoma leaf spot on coffee leaves, infestation by leaf miner and the yield of cultivars were evaluated. The results obtained allowed to conclude that: i) cultivars Catuaí Amarelo IAC 62, Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99 and Mundo Novo IAC 379-1 were higher than the others, with yield above the national average in 2020 and percentage of flat beans below 10%; ii) all cultivars evaluated showed a similar level of increment of variables that indicate plant growth and reproductive development; iii) the cultivation environment is favorable to infestation by the leaf miner and unfavorable to the incidence of rust; iv) The prevailing climatic conditions in the Vale do Ribeira Paulista is suitable for the production of Arabica coffee.Item Digital imaging of coffee leaves under different nitrogen concentrations applied to soil(Universidade Federal de Viçosa, 2022-01-09) Godoy, Leandro José Grava de; Carvalho, Alex Mendonça de; Freitas, Ana Flávia de; Botelho, Cesar Elias; Garibaldi, João Luís Teodoro; Ferrari, SamuelBrazil is the largest Coffea arabica L. producer and exporter in the world market. In view of the need for nitrogen fertilization, the objective of this work was to evaluate the use of digital images of coffee leaves as a function of nitrogen concentration and cultivars, as well as to evaluate the most adequate sampling of this technique to predict leaf nitrogen. The experiment was set in a greenhouse, at UNESP - Experimental Campus of Registro-SP, using 12L pots with medium sand. A completely randomized design was adopted, in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme, with four concentrations of N (0, 50, 100 and 200 mg dm-3), and two coffee cultivars (Mundo Novo and Obatã), with ten replications. The variables evaluated were: hue, dark green color index (DGCI), leaf area and leaf nitrogen content. The hue and DGCI were influenced by N concentration, cultivar and are dependent on the day after treatment application and the number of leaves used. The use of five leaves per replication was more adequate to estimate leaf N content. Hue, DGCI and leaf area were higher in Obatã depending on the day after application of the treatment and N concentration.
