Item Physical and chemical attributes of beans damaged by the coffee berry borer at different levels of infestation(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2024-05-09) Silva, Sabrina Alves; Pereira, Rosemary Gualberto Fonseca Alvarenga; Chalfoun, Sara Maria; Teixeira, Alexandre ResendeThe physical and chemical attributes of coffee beans have a direct relation with the sensory quality of the beverage and the commodity’s market value. The coffee berry borer is a pest that causes a worldwide harm, and its infestation compromises bean health and composition. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of infestation levels on beans physical and chemical parameters. Coffee samples were collected, and the damaged beans present in the samples were classified as to infestation level. The centesimal composition, color, quantification of bioactive compounds, and organic acids were evaluated. The L* and b* parameters of the CIELab color system were found to be significantly different between infestation levels. For chemical parameters, beans with major levels of infestation were found to differ from the others in the content of sugars, lipids, soluble solids, total titratable acidity, electrical conductivity, potassium leaching, succinic acid, and acetic acid. The presence of pests did not affect the bioactive compounds present in the coffee beans.Item Factors influencing the performance of phosphites on the control of coffee leaf rust(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2021) Honorato Júnior, Jaime; Debona, Daniel; Zambolim, Laércio; Rodrigues, Fabrício ÁvilaThis study investigated the effect of different phosphites on the control of coffee leaf rust (CLR) caused by Hemileia vastatrix, considered the major disease affecting coffee yield worldwide. Three-month-old coffee plants were sprayed with two doses each of the phosphite solutions (standard and double), as follows: K (40% P2O5; 1.5 and 3 mL·L-1), K (30% P2O5; 3 and 6 mL·L-1), Cu (2.5 and 5 mL·L- 1), Mn+Zn (3 and 6 mL·L-1) and Na (3 and 6 mL·L-1) 24 h before being inoculated with H. vastatrix. Leaves were not washed or washed with deionized water after the foliar phosphites spray. Plants sprayed with water served as the control treatment. Inoculation was performed on the abaxial side of the first pair of expanded leaves using a camel hairbrush with a suspension of urediniospores (1 mg per leaf). All phosphites applied at the standard doses (from 1.5 to 3 mL·L-1) reduced the total number of pustules (TNP) per leaf by 28-69% regardless of washing treatment. The biggest reductions were observed for Cu phosphite, which decreased the TNP per leaf by 60 and 69% without and with leaf washing, respectively. A similar trend was observed when the double doses of phosphites (from 3 to 6 mL·L-1) were used, though Na phosphite without leaf washing and Mn/Zn phosphite without and with leaf washing were not efficient to reduce the TNP per leaf. Without leaf washing, only Cu and Na phosphites decreased CLR severity at the standard doses (53-61%), whereas all phosphites, except the Mn/ Zn phosphite, reduced CLR severity at the double dose. The CLR severity was decreased using K 30%, K 40% and Cu phosphites When applied at the standard doses with leaf washing (41-59%). With double doses, only Cu and Na phosphites decreased CLR severity by 55% for both treatments. In conclusion, the efficiency of the phosphites for CLR control varied according to the accompanying cation, dose and washing conditions. The Cu phosphite resulted in the best CLR control regardless of the dose used and the washing conditions.Item First report of mixed infection by Pseudomonas syringae pathovars garcae and tabaci on coffee plantations(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2017-10) Rodrigues, Lucas Mateus Rivero; Sera, Gustavo Hiroshi; Guerreiro Filho, Oliveiro; Beriam, Luis Otavio Saggion; Almeida, Irene Maria Gatti deThe bacterial-halo-blight (Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae) is disseminated by the main coffee areas in the producing states of Brazil. On the other hand, the disease bacterial-leaf-spot (Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci) was reported only once in coffee seedlings in a sample collected in the State of São Paulo. In mid-2015, samples of coffee leaves with symptoms of foliar lesions surrounded by yellow halo, were collected in coffee plantations in the State of Paraná and fluorescent bacteria producing or not brown pigment in culture medium were isolated and determined as belonging to the Group I of P. syringae. Through biochemical, serological and pathogenicity tests, the pathogens were identified as P. syringae pv. garcae and P. syringae pv. tabaci, with prevalence of isolates belonging to pathovar tabaci and, as well as in certain samples, it was identified simultaneous infection by both etiological agents. Then, this is the first report of associated occurrence of garcae and tabaci pathovars of P. syringae and of the incidence of “bacterial-leaf-spot” under field conditions and in the State of Paraná.Item Levantamento fitossociológico de plantas daninhas em cafezal orgânico(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2010-07) Maciel, Cleber Daniel de Goes; Poletine, Juliana Parisotto; Oliveira Neto, Antônio Mendes de; Guerra, Naiara; Justiniano, WagnerA adequação de um cafezal para o sistema orgânico causa grande mudança no sistema de manejo de plantas daninhas, mas as informações sobre o comportamento da comunidade infestante em áreas de cultivo de café orgânico são escassas no Brasil. Objetivou-se com este trabalho realizar um levantamento fitossociológico da comunidade infestante em três cafezais (variedades Mundo Novo, Bourbon Vermelho e Obatã) desenvolvidos em sistema orgânico, no município de Garça (SP). Nas três áreas estudadas foram arremessados ao acaso cem quadrados metálicos com área vazada de 0,25 m2, nas entrelinhas da cultura. As espécies contidas no interior dos quadros foram identificadas segundo a espécie botânica, nome popular e família. A partir dos resultados, determinaram-se os parâmetros fitossociológicos: frequência, densidade, abundância, frequência relativa, densidade relativa, abundância relativa, índice de valor de importância e similaridade florísticas pelos métodos de Simple Matching de Sneath & Sokal e similaridade de Sorensen. As famílias que mais se destacaram, com maior número de espécies nas três áreas foram Poaceae e Asteraceae. Houve alta similaridade em todos os contrastes testados, já que pelo menos metade das espécies identificadas foi comum às duas áreas contrastadas.Item Resistência de plantas de Coffea arabica, Coffea canephora e híbridos interespecíficos à cercosporiose(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2010-10) Patricio, Flávia Rodrigues Alves; Braghini, Masako Toma; Fazuoli, Luiz CarlosO presente estudo objetivou avaliar a resistência de plantas de Coffea arabica, C. canephora e de híbridos interespecíficos, à cercosporiose (Cercospora coffeicola), importante doença da cultura do cafeeiro. Foram realizados dois experimentos em 2003, em Campinas (SP), com mudas das cultivares de C. arabica, Mundo Novo IAC 388-17-1, Mundo Novo IAC 376-4, Bourbon Amarelo, Bourbon Vermelho, Obatã IAC 1669-20, Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144, Catuaí Amarelo IAC 62, Icatu Precoce IAC 3282, Icatu Vermelho IAC 4045, Ouro Verde IAC H5010-5 e Tupi IAC 1669-33; de C. canephora, Robusta IAC 1653-7 e Apoatã IAC 2258, além de dois híbridos interespecíficos Piatã IAC 387 e Híbrido de Timor IAC 1559-13. As mudas foram submetidas à inoculação com uma suspensão de conídios preparada com cinco isolados coletados em diferentes regiões do Estado de São Paulo. Os materiais mais suscetíveis foram Robusta IAC 1653-7, Apoatã IAC 2258, Híbrido de Timor IAC 1559-13, Bourbon Vermelho e Bourbon Amarelo com incidência entre 63,1% e 81,6% no primeiro experimento e entre 70% e 93,3% no segundo e severidade (notas 1-6) entre 2,92 e 3,42 no primeiro experimento e entre 3,64 e 2,79 no segundo. Os materiais mais resistentes foram Piatã IAC 387, Ouro Verde IAC H5010-5 e Tupi IAC 1669-33, com incidência entre 28,4% e 35,5% no primeiro experimento e 21,1% e 55,6% no segundo, e severidade entre 1,44 e 1,73 e entre 1,28 e 1,88, respectivamente, no primeiro e segundo experimentos.Item Ocorrência de mancha aureolada em cafeeiros na Região do Triângulo Mineiro e Alto Paranaíba(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2011-10) Zoccoli, Débora Maria; Takatsu, Armando; Uesugi, Carlos HidemiA mancha aureolada do cafeeiro, causada por Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae, pode provocar perdas de até 70% em viveiros e campos estabelecidos em regiões sujeitas a ventos fortes, temperaturas amenas, chuvas frequentes e bem distribuídas. Por meio de levantamento foi detectada a incidência frequente da mancha aureolada com severidade variável, alternando-se ao longo dos anos nas áreas serranas do Triângulo Mineiro e Alto Paranaíba, de topografia acidentada e altitudes superiores a 1000 metros, constituindo-se em sério problema, que pode inviabilizar o cultivo do cafeeiro naquelas áreas, devido à ameaça pela doença. Foi estabelecida uma zona bastante nítida quanto às condições favoráveis para ocorrência da mancha aureolada compreendendo os municípios de Serra do Salitre, Carmo do Paranaíba, Rio Paranaíba, São Gotardo e Tiros. Foi possível recuperar P. s. pv. garcae e P. cichorii de folhas sadias em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento da planta, desde mudas até cafezais adultos e plenamente estabelecidos. A recuperação foi realizada pelo método de fricção da folha em meio de cultura semisseletivo, na ausência de sintomas, demonstrando a possibilidade de detecção da bactéria em plantas sadias. Dentre as variedades solicitadas pelos produtores para plantio em 2003/2004, não há nenhum material resistente, podendo, portanto, perdurar os focos de epidemias.Item Desenvolvimento de Oligonychus ilicis em Coffea canephora sob diferentes temperaturas(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2011-04) Polanczyk, Ricardo Antonio; Celestino, Flávio Neves; Ferreira, Lígia Souza; Melo, Débora Ferreira; Bestete, Luziani Rezende; Franco, Cláudio Roberto; Pratissoli, DirceuOligonychus ilicis (McGregor) (Acari) (Tetranychidae) é uma das principais pragas de Coffea canephora Pierre & Froehner. Neste trabalho, avaliou-se o efeito de diferentes temperaturas no desenvolvimento desse ácaro-vermelho em folhas de C. canephora, em laboratório. Confinaram-se 80 fêmeas em 40 arenas, constituídas de disco foliar de 4 cm, para oviposição nas temperaturas de 21, 24, 27, 30 e 33 ºC. Foram selecionados ao acaso pelo menos dois ovos para avaliar o desenvolvimento embrionário. Após a eclosão da larva, foram realizadas avaliações a cada 12 horas para obtenção da duração e sobrevivência larval. Para avaliar a longevidade foi transferido um ácaro macho da criação para as arenas com uma fêmea para acasalamento. O limite térmico de desenvolvimento inferior e a constante térmica foram determinados para a duração do desenvolvimento de ovo a adulto. O tempo de desenvolvimento das fases imaturas diminuiu com o aumento da temperatura. As fases de ovo, larva, protocrisálida, protoninfa, deutocrisálida, deutoninfa e teleiocrisálida variaram, respectivamente, de 10,4 a 4,3; 2,4 a 1,2; 2,0 a 1,0; 2,3 a 1,2; 1,9 a 1,0; 3,0 a 1,5 e 2,3 a 1,0 dias. O aumento da temperatura afetou o período de desenvolvimento, reduzindo a duração de ovo-adulto e a longevidade. O limite térmico inferior foi de 9,0 ºC para o período de ovo-adulto e constante térmica de 256,4 graus-dias. Em condições de laboratório, a faixa de temperatura que favorece o desenvolvimento do ácaro em C. canephora foi de 24 a 30 ºC. O limite térmico inferior não é limitante para ocorrência de O. ilicis em áreas cultivadas com C. canephora no estado do Espírito Santo.Item Effects of silicon on the penetration and reproduction events of Meloidogyne exigua on coffee roots(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2015-04) Silva, Rodrigo Vieira; Oliveira, Rosângela D’Arc de Lima; Ferreira, Patrícia da Silva; Castro, Douglas Barbosa; Rodrigues, Fabrício ÁvilaConsidering that the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne exigua has caused great yield losses to coffee production in Brazil, this study aimed to determine whether the penetration and the reproduction events of this nematode on the roots of plants from two coffee cultivars with different levels of basal resistance to this nematode could be affected by silicon (Si). Coffee plants from the cultivars Catuaí and IAPAR 59, which are susceptible and resistant, respectively, to M. exigua, were grown in pots containing Si-deficient soil that was amended with either calcium silicate (+Si) or calcium carbonate (–Si). The Si concentration on the root tissue significantly increased by 159 and 97% for the +Si plants from the cultivars Catuaí and IAPAR 59, respectively, compared to the –Si plants of these cultivars. The population of M. exigua, the number of galls and the number of eggs were significantly reduced on the roots of the +Si plants of the cultivars Catuaí and IAPAR 59 compared to the –Si plants of these cultivars. It was concluded that the development and reproduction events of M. exigua were negatively impacted on the roots of coffee plants supplied with Si.Item SH1 leaf rust and bacterial halo blight coffee resistances are genetically independent(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2017-04) Rodrigues, Lucas Mateus Rivero; Braghini, Masako Toma; Guerreiro Filho, OliveiroCoffee resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae has been associated to pleiotropic effect of SH1 allele, present in coffee plants resistant to certain races of Hemileia vastatrix, the causal agent of leaf rust, or genetic linkage between resistance alleles to both pathogens. To validate this hypothesis, 63 coffee plants in F2 generation were evaluated for resistance to 2 isolates of H. vastatrix carriers of alleles, respectively, v2, v5 (isolate I/2015) and 1; v2; v5 (isolate II/2015) with the objective to confirm presence of SH1 allele in resistant plants to isolate I/2015. The same coffee plants were evaluated for resistance to a mixture of P. syringae pv. garcae strains highly pathogenic to coffee. Results showed that, among F2 coffee allele SH1 carriers, resistant to isolate I/2015, resistant and susceptible plants to bacterial halo blight were found; the same segregation occurs between F2 homozygous for SH1 allele, susceptible to the same isolate (I/2015) of H. vastatrix. Results also indicate that there is no pleiotropic effect of gene or allele SH1 connection between genes conferring resistance to leaf rust caused by H. vastatrix and bacterial halo blight caused by P. syringae pv. garcae.Item Bacterial halo blight of coffee crop: aggressiveness and genetic diversity of strains(Instituto Agronômico (IAC), 2018-01) Maciel, Karen Wolf; Destefano, Suzete Aparecida Lanza; Beriam, Luis Otavio Saggion; Almeida, Irene Maria Gatti de; Patricio, Flavia Rodrigues Alves; Rodrigues, Lucas Mateus Rivero; Guerreiro Filho, OliveiroBacterial halo blight, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae, is an important disease of coffee crop occurring in Brazil and other countries. In recent years, outbreaks of this disease have damaged several coffee crops in Brazil. Aggressiveness and genetic diversity of 25 strains of P. s. pv. garcae, obtained between the years 1958 and 2011, in 23 cities of São Paulo and Minas Gerais states, as well as three strains from Kenya were evaluated in this study. The strains were inoculated on coffee seedlings cultivar Mundo Novo, and their genetic diversity was evaluated by ERIC-PCR, REP-PCR, and their combination. All the strains were pathogenic to the coffee seedlings; the results of pathogenicity tests, in both experiments, could be divided in four aggressiviness classes (highly aggressive; aggressive; moderately aggressive and less aggressive). The Kenyan strains grouped separately from the Brazilian strains with ERIC-PCR and the combination of ERIC- and REP-PCR. The Brazilian strains could be grouped in two sub-clusters, the first including the older strains, obtained from 1958 to 1978, and the other comprising the remaining strains. With a few exceptions, strains isolated from 1997 to 2011, grouped mainly by their region of origin, were predominantly isolated from higher altitude regions, above 800 m. This probably occurred because the climatic conditions that prevail in these regions, characterized by milder temperatures and regular rainfall, are favorable for the coffee crop and for the production of high quality coffee beverage, but can be also favorable to bacterial halo blight.
