    Physiological and nutritional parameters of drought resistance in coffee seedlings genotypes

    Drought is an environmental condition that compromises the development of coffee plants. New coffee genotypes that are resistant to drought must be selected quickly and practically. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the resistance of five genotypes of Coffea arabica, including three new genotypes with introgression of genes from Coffea racemosa (H0113-40-26-1, H0113-40-26-19, and H0113-40-26-10), to water restriction and relate the intensity of plant wilting with physiological responses and nutrient accumulation. The experiment was conducted using 45 coffee seedlings obtained from seeds with six pairs of leaves cultivated in tubes. Some seedlings were subjected to two water restriction periods, whereas the remainder were kept under irrigation. The photosynthesis rate, transpiration rate, and wilting intensity were evaluated after each restriction period. Nutrient content was also evaluated after two periods of water restriction. The evaluation of wilting intensity corroborated the physiological parameters. There was a reduction in photosynthesis and transpiration rates under water restriction and nutrient accumulation in coffee seedlings H0113-40-26-1, H0113-40-26-19, and H0113-40-26-10 increased under these conditions. C. arabica genotypes carrying the genes of C. racemosa presented good drought resistance, with H0113-40-26-10 being the most resistant and showing the lowest wilt intensity.

    IPR Pérola: Dwarf Arabica coffee cultivar with high resistance to leaf rust and large beans

    IPR Pérola is a Coffea arabica cultivar developed from a cross between IAPAR 59 and Mundo Novo IAC 376-4. It features a dwarf-medium size, high yield, excellent cup quality, a medium-early ripening cycle, and large beans. Additionally, it boasts high resistance to coffee leaf rust.

    IPR Alvorada – Dwarf Arabica coffee cultivar with high yield

    IPR Alvorada is a Coffea arabica cultivar with C. canephora introgression, developed from a cross between IAPAR 59 and Mundo Novo IAC 376-4. This cultivar has a dwarf-medium size, high yield, good cup quality, strong vegetative vigor, a medium fruit ripening cycle, and slight resistance to coffee leaf rust.

    Assisted selection using molecular markers linked to rust resistance SH3 gene in Coffea arabica

    The aim of this work was to validate markers linked to the SH3 gene of coffee leaf rust (CLR) resistance and use them in assisted selection. Initially, we validated the markers in genotypes already known to carry SH3. Next, we performed phenotype and genotype evaluation for resistance to CLR in coffee plants growing under field conditions. We used Arabica coffee progenies derived from BA-10, which carries the SH3 gene due to introgression of C. liberica. Three SCAR markers (SP-M16-SH3, BA-48-21O-f, and BA-124-12K-f) and one SSR marker (Sat244) linked to SH3 gene were used to amplify the coffee plants’ DNA. Our assessments of markers validation in resistant genotypes, SP-M16-SH3 and BA-124-12K-f, were efficient to identify the SH3 gene. These two markers were used to evaluate the progenies derived from BA-10 and were significantly linked to the phenotype evaluations. The SP-M16-SH3 marker was more efficient, with the advantage of being codominant.

    Esta publicação tem por objetivo disponibilizar e sistematizar, de forma sucinta, as principais características agronômicas e tecnológicas de cultivares de café arábica, a fim de auxiliar os produtores dos Cafés do Brasil na escolha do material genético que melhor atenda às suas necessidades técnicas e econômicas. São destacadas as principais características de 90 cultivares de Coffea arabica, as quais foram fruto do trabalho colaborativo de programas de pesquisa de instituições fundadoras e parceiras do Consórcio Brasileiro de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento do Café, rede integrada de pesquisa constituída em 1997, formada por mais de 40 instituições de ensino, pesquisa e extensão rural, coordenada pela Embrapa Café.

    IPR 106: new Arabica coffee cultivar, resistant to some Meloidogyne paranaensis and M. incognita nematode populations of Paraná

    Cultivar IPR 106 resulted from a spontaneous hybridization between “Icatu IAC 925” and an unknow dwarf plant. It is a dwarf cultivar with high rusticity, late ripening cycle, large grains, excellent cup quality and resistance to some populations of the nematodes Meloidogyne paranaensis and M. incognita found in the state of Paraná.
